Foundation & Friends Book Sale

We invite you to browse the book sale, located in the library's first-floor cafe, where you can find books at a bargain!

We are NOT taking donations of books and other materials at this time. We will resume taking donations on August 1. Please do not leave materials under any circumstances, as it creates extra work and trash costs for the library. 

Beginning August 1, the Indian Prairie Public Library will accept donations of new or gently used books. Donations are limited to three bags or boxes.

The library will not accept donations of the following:

  • encyclopedias
  • magazines
  • National Geographic
  • Reader's Digest Condensed Books
  • textbooks
  • books that are musty, mildewed, yellowed, or soiled
  • books with ripped covers or pages or broken spines
  • record albums• VHS, cassette tapes, and compact discs (CDs)

We reserve the right to decline donations based on condition, our current inventory levels, and the type of item. Please do not leave materials under any circumstances, as it creates extra work and trash costs for the library.  

Per the library's policy: The library collection has been enriched by donations of materials to the library. The same criteria for inclusion of purchased materials in the collection will be applied to donated materials. In accepting donations of any materials intended for the library, the right of the final disposition of such gifts is reserved for the Executive Director and staff. The same criteria for inclusion in the collection that are used for purchase decisions shall be applied to gifts. Gifts that cannot be added to the collection shall be disposed of at the discretion of the library. They may be given to the Foundation & Friends for its book sale. Materials will be processed and shelved in accordance with standard library practices. The library cannot appraise the value of donated materials but will issue a receipt acknowledging the donation.


Recycling Resources

  • DuPage County Green Initiatives & Recycling - Learn about electronics and other recycling services. Explore the recycling guide for information on where to dispose of hazardous and other types of solid waste. Get details about local recycling events including electronics recycling.
  • SCARCE - Accepts books in any condition, including encyclopedias, textbooks, and moldy books. They also, accept art and craft supplies, medical equipment, flags, and much more. 
  • Earth 911 - Find information on where to recycle everything from used motor oil to paint to batteries and electronics in your neighborhood.
  • Freecycle - A nonprofit network of people giving and getting free materials (from furniture to appliances and electronics). Emphasizes reusing and keeping those items out of landfills.
  • Greener Gadgets - Provides information on living and buying green. It includes a calculator for determining your energy use and a way to search for recycling centers by zip code.
  • Recycle Bank - Offers a points system for recycling, which you can use for discounts and merchandise. The site boasts more than 2 million users.

Donate Food, Clothing, & Household Goods

  • Amvets - Accepts clothing and household items. Call 708/388-7800 to arrange a pick-up or drop-off location.
  • Downers Grove Area FISH, Inc. - Accepts donations of food and clothing. Located at 4340 Prince St., Downers Grove, IL 60515, 630/964-7776
  • Goodwill Industries - Accepts clothing, appliances, furniture, computers, and vehicles. Drop off at 6300 Kingery Highway, Willowbrook, IL 60514, or to arrange a pick up 630/323-9186.
  • HCS Family Services - Accepts food donations. Located at 22 N. Elm Street., Hinsdale, Illinois 60521, 630/323-2500.
  • People's Resource Center - Accepts food, clothing, books classroom supplies, and art supplies.  Occasionally PRC accepts working Windows-compatible standard desktop/tower/laptop computers, certain HP laser printers, and networking equipment. 104 Chestnut, Westmont, 630/682-5402.
  • The Hope Chest - Accepts donations of clothing to benefit the Constance Morris House, a shelter for abused women and children. Located at 305 W. Hillgrove, La Grange, IL 60525, 708/482-0359.
  • The Salvation Army Darien Family Store and Donation Center - Accepts donations of clothing, automobiles, furniture, and other resalable items. 7511 Lemont Road, Darien, 800-SA-TRUCK to schedule a pickup.
  • West Suburban Community Pantry - Accepts food and personal care needs. 6809 Hobson Valley Drive, Suite 118, Woodridge, IL 60517, 630/512-9921.
