La La Land

La La Land (2016, rated PG-13) was the best musical I've seen in years, and so of course I think the soundtrack is great too. As I listen to each song, I can see the scene in the movie in my memory. I have a cousin whose daughter is a dancer and whenever I hear the opening song, "Another day of Sun," I see those kids dancing on those cars on that bottle-necked freeway in Los Angeles and it reminds me of her.

While it may be true that La La Land would be a terrific rom/com even without a great musical score, having fabulous music makes it the great movie that it is. I think it should have won the Oscar for Best Picture, but what do I know? Check out the soundtrack on Hoopla today.

A Star is Born Soundtrack

This moving soundtrack is from the award-winning movie A Star is Born starring Lady Gaga as the struggling songwriter, Ally, and Bradley Cooper as the famous country music singer, Jackson Maine. It features blues and folk rock, country, pop, rock, piano ballads, and heart-wrenching duets that complement the heartfelt tale of doomed romance.

Bradley Cooper(who knew he could sing?) took on the blues-inflected, country-rock soul of Jackson Maine. The talented Lady Gaga excels in her powerful solos. The progression of songs goes from cover songs when Ally hasn't been discovered yet, to power ballads, to pop-radio songs, and finishes with "I'll Never Love Again."

"Shallow" is a highlight of this soundtrack. Watch Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper perform it at the 2019 Academy Awards. Lady Gaga won an Oscar for Best Original Song. They both won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Lady Gaga and the other songwriters won a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper took the lead in writing their own songs with help from Lukas Nelson and D.J. White Shadow aka Paul Blair. The soundtrack is interspersed with dialogue from the movie which gives perspective.

Besides "Shallow," I especially liked "Always Remember Us This Way," "Is That Alright," "Maybe It's Time," and "I'll Never Love Again."

Listen to A Star is Born Soundtrack (2018) on Hoopla. There is also a version without dialogue. To watch the movie, place a hold on the DVD or Blu-ray.

The Greatest Showman: Reimagined (Deluxe)

If your household is like mine, you might have formed the habit of playing The Greatest Showman soundtrack on repeat…and you might be okay with that.  The songs are too good to get sick of, but maybe you're ready for a new flavor.

The Music of SMASH (2012)

Loved the show and love this CD! The Music of SMASH features thirteen songs from the first season of the hit TV show.

There's time to catch up on Season 1 before the February 5 premiere of Season 2 on NBC featuring guest actress (and local) Jennifer Hudson.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King [original motion picture soundtrack] (2003)

Another great soundtrack by Howard Shore! The music is very suspenseful and I am usually able to imagine what scenes are playing during each song. I enjoyed listening to this CD when I was in the middle of writing my short story. It gives me a lot of energy and it's very entertaining.

My favorite song from The Return of the King is probably "The Grey Havens." It's the last song during the film, and I think it was a great way to end it.

If you missed last month's review of The Two Towers soundtrack, read it now.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers [original motion picture soundtrack] (2002)

I love listening to soundtracks from different films, and The Lord of the Rings movies have some of the best soundtracks. My favorite from The Two Towers is probably "Evenstar." I can listen to it all the time.

Check back next month for my thoughts on The Return of the King soundtrack.

Did you know? You can see what soundtracks we've added to the collection recently.

Love Me or Leave Me

lovemeorleavemeLove Me or Leave Me by Doris Day (1955)
Doris Day played real life 1920s singer Ruth Etting in the movie of the same name. Here she performs great songs from the early decades of the twentieth century. Songs include the upbeat "Stay on the Right Side Sister" and "Shaking the Blues Away" and lovely ballads such as "I'll Never Stop Loving You" and "Love Me or Leave Me." You can also check out the original movie with Day and James Cagney. Find out Doris Day is more than just "Que Sera Sera."
